Still busy .... #BandOnTheRun

As I was saying, still busy! I have a mental list (does that sound right?) of fascinating blog posts I'd like to write but can't seem to get my head around starting them.....
...this week, we're coming up to the end of the school year. Work-wise that means more work preparing reports, helping kids get ready for their official Cambridge University English exams in June/July, organizing our "summer courses" (July), and organizing the 2015-16 course. Family-wise, it means our oldest son is about to finish primary/junior school and move up to the Big Kids' School in September. The year a kid has their 12th birthday is the year they step up to secondary education. Apart from fragile emotions (where did those 12 years go?!), this also means end-of-school festivals and parties, plus the beaurocracy of paperwork to register him at the new school.
On the "campaign" front, it's also been one of those weeks. Started out last Saturday with a Town Cycling morning out that I was involved in organizing. One of the objectives of the outing was to gather local cyclists' ideas so as to write an article for a local newspaper, and a letter to be sent to the council. Guess who had to write them? Plus, spreading the news about these activities on social networks...
On the "save the river Ebro" front, we have been invited to defend our position before the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament on the 22nd. I cannot go, for work reasons, but am involved in most of the coordination of the trip and lobbying over the internet, arranging private meetings beforehand, passing on information to MEPs and so on. Also had to translate an important document we want the Parliament to have as well as a more simple leaflet which we hope explains our situation clearly.
On the "Catalan independence" campaign, some of the things will remain unsaid here, but I did go to the local indy group's meeting to explain my proposal of inviting an "expert in internet activism" to Tortosa to set up a workshop on how to use our time on the net most efficiently for our objectives.
At the back of my mind, I also have to organize things for our 3-day break in Mallorca next weekend to visit the sister-in-law and our 4-month-old nephew.
For no reason other than the fact that I was amazed when a 16-year-old student told me yesterday that he went (with his folks) to France last week just to see Paul McCartney, here´s Band on the Run:

A most disgusting song - Rodriguez #ChristmasGifts

CDs: Coming from reality, del Rodriguez; Anthology, Kirsty MacColl, Paris, Zaz; Ghost, Kate Rusby; two Christmas albums, Kate Rusby; 50 words for snow, Kate Bush; Producto Interior Bruto, Juan Colomo.
.....
Wow, a new year already... and 'nowt said on t'old blog! Let's see if I can shake off the lethargy and find a bit of time to get this up and running again. So, Christmas came and went and as usual I got loads of socks, but also loads of CDs, and books and DVDs with a music theme. Here goes:
CDs: Coming from reality, by Rodriguez; Anthology, Kirsty MacColl; Paris, Zaz; Ghost, Kate Rusby; two Christmas albums, Kate Rusby; 50 words for snow, Kate Bush; Producto Interior Bruto, Juan Colomo.
DVDs: Northern Soul, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Enemy Within (about the miners' strike), and a documentary about the pop group Pulp. Bookwise I got a novel based on the fall of Barcelona in the 1714 War of Succession, and biographies of two of my favourite singers: Eva Cassidy and Kate Bush.
So, here's a bit of Rodriguez.

Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush

....
Kate Bush is back in the news. First concerts in 30 years, and to make up for not going, we're having a mini Kate-revival at home; CDs, singles, Youtube videos galore.
So, remember when her first single came out, Wuthering Heights*? Just seeing, and hearing, it on Top of the Pops blew my mind back then, and it still blows it now. How can a song written in an hour by an 18-year-old be so impressive, reaching the listener on so many levels? Beautiful, and original - have you ever heard anything else like it?
A few years later, when I bought my own first turntable, this was one of the first singles I bought. Around the same time (15 years old?), I read the book Wuthering Heights for the first time, humming the words as I read... a book which would go on to become the book I've read most times (4). So, to cut a long story short, I love the book, love the films, love the moors, and love the song! And I love our extremely-English excentric singer, Kate Bush :)
So, I'll post this song again (it originally formed part of my successful series of posts on songs-related-to-literature a couple of years back).

*Footnote: I have to confess, for years I was amazed by the song and her singing but mis-understood half the lyrics. The most blatant confusion being the "Wuthering, Wuthering, Wuthering Heights" she sings at 0:44s As I'm pretty sure that Yorkshire folk like myself pronounce the name with a clear U, Kate's "English" pronunciation threw me into thinking she was singing, "want to be, wanna be...."! Not knowing, originally, that the heroine's name was Cathy, Kate's peculiar way of pronouncing it also threw me - "can't be"?

September gurls - Big Star

...
Still half on holiday, as I'm only working afternoon-evenings till the kids go back to school and our students start on the 15th. We should be doing the traditional activity in September - picking up our carob beans but... the thing is that this used to be an important task back when people had very little and everything counted. Carob beans provided a good source of food for livestock in the winter. When people stopped depending so much on the land, the next generation would still collect them to sell as apparently they are used for interesting processes. The seeds from the bean, correctly processed, provide an interesting thickening agent for ice cream and many medicines apparently. Nowadays, though, even this market has fallen through the floor and you'd be lucky to get a couple of €uros for a sackful of beans despite the back-breaking work it entails, in hot sticky September weather. I'd leave ours on the ground but the problem is they fall on our "nice neat gravelled" patch of the garden [see photo] so need collecting anyway, whether we sell them or not. Plus they attract rats. Rats just love to eat them.
However, given my back and leg problems, I'm gonna take it easy - in 15-minute sessions (probably still be after them when next year's harvest comes along!). Much prefer to go to the excellent secluded beaches we have around here...

Wild Horses - The Stones / Els Rolling

Curios.
....
As you may recall, I'm not big on pointing out differences between living in Catalonia or England, but here's another one. English folk call The Rolling Stones, The Stones; whereas Catalans abbreviate them as "Els Rolling". I suppose it's as Catalans are used to the first word being a noun, and the following word the adjective.
Interesting fact, hey!

.....
The English, and others, have already voted (apparently voting on a Thursday as on "pay-day" Friday they traditionally govt blinding drunk until Monday came round again), but we don`t vote in Catalona till Sunday. The European elections are important as the EU is important, in my opinion. If nothing else, this invention has stopped England, France and Germany from kicking the sh*t out of each other as they had been doing for a thousand years. What else has it achieved? Well, probably not half what we would like it to do as the EU bodies seem to have unfortunately copied all the bad habits of national political systems (corruption, inefficiency, beaurocracy, favouring "dark" interests over citizens rights...) and few of the good ones. It needs a good shake up if it is to be the body we want and deserve.
What is EU going to do about the climate change? Where are the plans for when the oil reserves run out? What should we do faced with wars and injustice in the world? Is it our role to step in in cases like Iraq, Ukraine, the Nigerian school girls? What about freedom and privacy vs control and security? Where's the long term plan to maintain European citizens priviliges (cash galore, smartphones, 3 cars...), or should we? All this and many more questions should be on the table but the debate seems to centre around Daily Mail headlines - shock, horror, we've found a Rumanian who's fooling the system, let's all vote for a posh populist racist party. Oh no, Europe won't let us put inches on our measurements (a lie) or eat wrongly-shaped bananas (another lie), let's all pull out of Europe and put millions of jobs at risk ...
And in Catalonia, basically we'll all vote depending on each party's opinions regarding the independence issue, and screw the pan-European politics for another 4 years. At least that's how I'll be voting anyway.

I would change my vote in a flash though, and vote for anyone who proposes this for the EU Official Anthem ...

Catalonia and the #IndyRef question 9/11/2014 - Suffragette City

...
Just before Christmas, another Big Step was taken in Catalonia's march to freedom - well, march to a referendum. Four political parties (including the present governing one) which form 2/3 of the Parliament, came together to call the Independence Referendum for 9th November 2014. They also agreed on the question(s):
Do you think Catalonia should become a State? If so, do you think it should be an Independent State.

Presumably the first option is for those who believe some kind of federation with Spain is still possible. For those who want the full independence option, the campaign is known as the "yes yes" campaign as you'd need a double "yes" to win.
As predicted in my previous posts, Spain has already said that this referendum will NOT be allowed as it's anti-constitutional - so it's the old "ancient Laws" against "the will of the people" conflict again. As many people say, if we only followed laws without ever changing or adapting them, black people still wouldn't be allowed on buses in the USA and women wouldn't be voting.
Watch this space ...!

Hugh Laurie - Copper Bottom Blues

....
Saw this documentary a few weeks ago - Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Blues band go on a tour of the USA with the objective of exploring the history of the blues and finally play a concert on the Queen Mary in California, just as Hugh's hero, Professor Longhair, has played 40 years before.
If you've followed Hugh's career, you'll probably know that he is a decent actor, a pretty good comedian, but his real love is music. For the last couple of years he's been recording and playing blues and generally having a damm good time of it! This film is fascinating - whether you are interested in blues or just like hearing a real fan speak about their favourite subject.

It Might Get Loud #JimmyPage #TheEdge #JackWhite

....
The third music-based documentary I'm going to praise is It Might Get Loud. The history and life of three of the great rock guitarists, albeit each one from a diferent time period. Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White. Their lives, upbringing, first steps on the road to fame, and musical fulfillment - their different concepts and playing techniques - loads of amusing and interesting anecdotes ... it all adds up to a "must see" for anyone interested in the last 50 years of rock music. The three stars also meet up to chat together and play a couple of tunes.
I posted these a couple of years back when I first saw this film, so today what I'll do is post different songs they are each well-known for (gulp, losing control of my English here!)

Searching for Sugarman #Rodriguez

Primer, Searching for Sugarman (no sé si ho van traduir aqui, seria Busant al Sugarman).
....
The last few weeks, I've actually managed to watch a bit of telly - for once in my stressed-up life. Among other films, I've tried to catch up with a few music-based documentaries that I'd not had chance to see yet. And now I will recommend them to you! First up, Searching for Sugarman. The story of the singer Sixto Rodriguez. This film is especially great to watch if you don't know the story beforehand, so I'm not going to give you any clues here! But I will insist - it's well worth watching, especially if you like the magic of life, the magic of music. All the characters, and the film-maker, show the joy they receive through music, and how it adds a certain magic to their lives. So, if you can, check it out at the cinema, fantastic; if not, here's a Youtube link to the film. Even if you are not struck on the music itself (impossible!), the story of how music can change or make people's lives is always awe-inspiring. So, first a song, and then the full film ...

She does it right - Dr Feelgood #hospitals

Ultimament he tingut l'oportunitat d'usar diferents serveis publics tant a Catalunya com a Anglaterra.
Voleu sentir Doctor Feelgood?
...
So, recently I've been using various public services in Catalonia and England. As I said once, the objective of this blog isn't to write witty deep comparisons between the two countries, but maybe the odd trivial anecdote:
Today - health services. Having visited doctors and hospitals in both Tortosa and Barnsley, I'll start by saying I'm reasonably pleased. Despite all the cutbacks and job losses, waiting times and services seem to be not too different from recent years. Well done workers! Maybe in bigger cities, the expected collapse on health services is more noticeable.
Identity - luckily English people still don't have ID cards, so I didn't have to show one to get served in England, I simply filled in a form with a few personal details (name, address, age, religion!). Back here in Tortosa, if you don't show your ID and/or social security card, you're in trouble!
Parking - Catalans may be shocked by the fact that you have to pay to park in Barnsley Hospital car park - and that also applies to workers. I suppose many must use public transport to avoid this, or I know people who park a little further away and walk. It seems tough to have to pay, but if it's the only way to keep a few places free for those who can't walk so far ...? People believe Tortosa Hospital has a parking problem. As it's built on top of a hill in the town centre amidst the old castle walls,  it is true that it is strange with several very small (free) car parks  shoved when they can fit them. However, there is a large carpark a 5-minute walk away which people hardly use, preferring instead to park on the pavements! Thus, yours truly has to walk down the middle of the road to get there!
Enough, before I get grumpy, here's Doctor Feelgood:

Bat out of Hell - Meatloaf

...
So, this month sees the 36th anniversary  of Bat Out Of Hell - one of the greatest, most groundbreaking, amazing, successful LPs ever. Meatloaf (together with Jim Steinman and a host of amazing musicians, singers and producers) came together to make magic when they recorded this album. Not a dull moment on it. They could probably write a book about this record, its history, music and success - and someone probably already has. For now, though, you'll just have to make do with Wikipedia.
I'm including the Youtube of the full album but, please, listen to me (for once): if there was ever a day when I said all this listening to music via tinpot speakers on your computer ain't no good, this is that day! Do yourselves a favour - buy the bloody album, if possible on vinyl. Bang it on a proper turntable and play it through some decent speakers, and be prepared for 45 minutes of heaven (or hell).

Soldier Blue - Buffy Saint Marie #12th October

The 12th of October is the Spanish National Day, a celebration held every year but which is gaining a certain notoriety this year as we'll explain in a moment.
Apparently it's held on this day to celebrate the day Columbus discovered America back in 1492, after sailing the ocean blue, and what this meant for the progress of the world and the union of two great continents. This has always seemed a little strange to me - that a country's principal day of celebration is the day they invaded another country/continent. On top of that, as we know Columbus wasn't the first to go to America, nor did he know where he actually was - and he may not even have been Spanish (though he was working for, and in the name of, the Spanish royal family). Wikipedia says that this day is also celebrated across South America, but I imagine it's mainly celebrated by the descendants of Europeans as the descendents of native Americans probably think quite differently about the "progress" this event involved.
Respecting different cultural and historic backgrounds, and speaking from a not-too-informed point of view, I can't help imagining if other European countries like England or Holland held their most important national celebration on the day they landed in north America or the day England "discovered" Australia. Strange.
Anyway, it's celebrated all over Spain but with a "certain reticence" (understatement of the year) in those parts of the political state of Spain which would rather get out of there - such as Catalonia or the Basques. There is a huge and lavish military parade in Madrid and lots of patriotic acts. In Catalonia, most people take advantage of the day off to go mushroom hunting or a to have a paella with the family - but I even know people who make an effort to actually work on this day.
Anyway, there has always been some kind of rally or act in Barcelona by those here who like to celebrate this day - not many, but it's a free country. However, this year, it's becoming a Hot Topic. Coming just a month after 1,600,000 people took to the streets to demand independence, the pro-Spanish unionists are taking the rally in Barcelona seriously to try and show that there are just as many Catalan people against independence and in favour of unity with Spain etc. Obviously, if you look at the numbers, that's an impossible task and so they've started organising buses from other parts of Spain for people to come and march in Barcelona. I suppose they'll give them a Barcelona-disguise when they arrive to make them look like locals (a Messi shirt should do).
Many of these buses are paid for by political parties (unlike the pro-indy acts, where every person pays their own way). Right-wing parties such as the PP, UpD, Cs are all taking part and encouraging their voters to, but alongside them will be the Falange party. Those of you who know any Spanish history (Civil War, Franco) may be surprised that this party actually legally exists! But it does, and it will be marching through Barcelona beside the Spanish conservative party, and the Catalan equivalent of the racist EDL (the PxC)! Marginal neo-nazi groups have also expressed their intention to join in - with many internet messages explicitly stating they will cause violence and "hunt the Catalans"! Catalan police have said they will take firm steps to prevent this - but the principal Spanish police trade union have actually asked their members to take part in the rally! (yep, there are different police forces here)
As they say, you couldn't make it up!
This seems to be the Spanish govt's strategy to convince Catalans of the benefits of staying in Spain - intimidation, threats, fascism, and violence if you consider leaving!

Today's song - not being an expert on native south (or north) American music, rather than just put a random track on, we'll change subjects slightly and remember Buffy Saint Marie's 1971 song from the film of the same name about the massacre of north American natives.

The Letter - Joe Cocker #Artur_Mas

We interrupt this series of rants, raves and placid summer vibes to offer those of you not bored out of their mind with "the Catalan Question", The Letter. After much prevaricating about the proverbial bush, the Catalan President has finally put in a formal request for an independence referendum. Here's the English version they have published - a translation which could do with a fine tuning, but ... cordially ...

Artur Mas, the President of Catalonia, sent a letter to Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on July 26, 2013, officially proposing negotiations to hold a referendum on  Catalonia decide its political future.
Most Honorable Sr. D. Mariano Rajoy Brey
President Government of Spain
Moncloa Palace 28071 Madrid
Dear President:
The Catalan people's desire for self government is well known, and has been both demanded and exercised over the centuries. In the current democratic period, begun at the end of the last century, said desire was initially channeled through the Statute of Autonomy of 1979.
The Catalan Parliament passed a new proposal for a Statute of Autonomy in 2005 which was approved first by the Spanish Congress in 2006 and finally via referendum by the People of Catalonia. My personal involvement, although I did not act in an official capacity of the Government at that time, was, as is well known, during the entire negotation, to facilitate Catalonia's place within Spain.
The later ruling from the Spanish Constitutional Court diluted and to a large degree annulled the democratic will of the Catalan people expressed at the ballot booths, and gave firm evidence that it was impossible to continue developing Catalonia's self-government in the way it had up to that moment.
More recently, during the previous legislative session, the negative answer to any kind of negotiation with respect to a proposal of a Fiscal Pact, promoted by the Government of the Generalitat and approved by a wide margin of the Parliament of Catalonia, proved, once more, the Spanish State's inability to answer the proposals presented by Catalonia.
This blockage along with the most widely attended demonstration in the history of Catalonia last September 11 brought me to the conclusion that I must call snap elections so that Catalonia could freely and democratically decide its political future.
These last elections to the Parliament of Catalonia resulted in wide popular support, with a very high turnout—indeed the highest turnout in the history of this kind of elections—to various political powers which presented in their electoral platforms the need to exercise the right to decide.
The Parliament of Catalonia has demonstrated on various occasions during the present legislature, and with super majorities, the Catalan People's support for the right to decide and has established a mandate for dialogue and negotiation with the Government of Spain and with the objective of holding a democratic referendum. The recent constitution of the National Assembly on the Right to Decide demonstrated, concurrently, the wide support that this movement has among institutions, commercial and social organizations, and the civil society all throughout Catalonia.
The Advisory Council for National Transition, an organism created by the Government of the Generalitat and which is formed by distinguished members of our community, argues in its first report that there are legal methods that would allow such a referendum to be held. Because it is a high quality report whose content is of certain interest, I will take the liberty of making a copy available to you within a few days.
It is for all of the above that I believe there are favorable conditions for celebrating a referendum in Catalonia: widespread citizen and parliamentary support, the will to dialogue and negotiate, and the existence of legal frameworks in which it may be held.
I understand that when these circumstances occur, most certainly a product of a long historical trajectory that I described at the beginning of this letter, it is the duty of the public governmental representatives to forge the political will that would allow for a response to the legitimate, peaceful, democratic, and majority-held aspirations of a people, in our case, the Catalan people.
In our last meeting, I suggested that a political response to the Catalan people's democratic demands would be necessary. Today, I reiterate that to you in writing, with the same spirit of dialogue and negotiation as was present in our last meeting.
I am aware of your position against the celebration of a referendum, as you told me at our last meeting. Nevertheless, I understand at the same time that other countries—also in the European Union—have found ways of solving these kinds of challenges and realities democratically and legally. Spain should not be the exception to the rule.
Therefore, I express once again the need to open a dialogue and negotiation that would allow a celebration of to exercise the right to decide. a referendum of the People of Catalonia, in the shortest timeframe possible, within the legal framework that we establish.
Cordially,

Smoke on the water - Deep Purple #Fumar

I vaig flipar.
....
So, I first came here 20-something years ago looking forward to the Mediterranean lifestyle and café-culture. But my fascination with going out and socializing over a coffee/beer soon came to an end when I realised all the bars, cafés, restaurants were full of smoke and smokers. Little by little I've given up on going out for this reason. Nowadays, smoking is not allowed inside these establishments but this law has come about too late for me. And, it's still permitted outdoors on the street terraces etc which would be an ideal place to cool off over an iced drink in summer if it were'nt for the Hiroshima-style smoke cloud floating around.
So, I'm out of touch.
However, last week we went out three nights to enjoy the Tortosa Renaissance Festival, going from outdoor bar to outdoor bar and having a great time. And this gave me a chance to observe whether the smoking situation has changed. Well, it hasn't. I was amazed and shocked to see how many youngsters smoke, and heavily. Where has the education system failed when young 18-25 year olds still think smoking will not harme them, or me, or will actually make them look cool?! Sad.
Last week's newspaper said that the price of a packet of cigarettes was going up to 5€. I think this is pathetically low, in the UK I'm sure it's almost 10€ and people still smoke. Yeah, yeah, there are lots of harmful things we do and nobody tries to ban them - but how many are so clearly and scientifically-proven to just be nails in your coffin, and mine? Yeah, yeah, freedom of choice etc, but freedom to harm/annoy..?
To top it all, now many youngsters roll their own cigarettes, claiming it's cheaper. Well, it should be more expensive as it's even more harmful than smoking manufactured ones.
Here endeth the rant.

Jungleland - Bruce #Clarence

By popular demand, it's another Bruce Springsteen classic. Eleven minutes of pure musical pleasure. Enjoy (it). The "it" being necessary if you still, like me, believe the verb "to enjoy" is transitive.Other than that, forget the grammar and focus on this song and THAT sax solo!!

Up the junction - Squeeze #LyricsTellAStory

....
Some may need three or four hundred pages to tell a good story; others can do it in three minutes.
In my opinion, some of the greatest lyrics ever have come from this band in terms of originality, poignancy, humour - and above all, originality again! None of this "he opened the door, I fell on the floor", "my love for you, is quite big too" tosh out of the Idiots Guide to Write Cheap Attempts at Deep Lyrics.

I never thought it would happen
With me and the girl from Clapham
Out on a windy common
That night I ain't forgotten
When she dealt out the rations
With some or other passions
I said you are a lady
Perhaps she said, I may be
We moved into a basement
With thoughts of our engagement
We stayed in by the telly
Although the room was smelly
We spent our time just kissing
The railway arms we're missing
But love had got us hooked up
And all our time it took up

I got a job with Stanley
He said I'd come in handy
And started me on Monday
So I had a bath on Sunday
I worked eleven hours
And bought the girl some flowers
She said she'd seen a doctor
And nothing now could stop her

I worked all through the winter
The weather brass and bitter
I put away a tenner
Each week to make her better
And when the time was ready
We had to sell the telly
Late evenings by the fire
With little kicks inside her

This morning at 4:50
I took her rather nifty
Down to an incubator
Where thirty minutes later
She gave birth to a daughter
Within a year a walker
She looked just like her mother
If there could be another

And now she's two years older
Her mother's with a soldier
She left me when my drinking
Became a proper stinging
The devil came and took me
From bar to street to bookie
No more nights by the telly
No more nights nappies smelling

Alone here in the kitchen
I feel there's something missing
I'd beg for some forgiveness
But begging's not my business
And she won't write a letter
Although I always tell her
And so it's my assumption
I'm really up the junction

Waterloo - Abba #Eurovision1974

...
I'm not one of those memory-types who can remember what they used to do when they were 5, 10, or even 15. I'm lucky, in fact, if  can remember what I had for dinner yesterday. But, and it's a Big But, I can clearly remember at the tender age of  7 watching Eurovision 1974 and seeing Abba. In one word - WOW!!
