Everybody knows - Leonard Cohen
Catalunya Radio played this masterpiece this week, reminding us of just what a genius Leonard is, and just how relevant his message still is.
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed Everybody knows that the war is over Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows, Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates And a long stem rose
Everybody knows, Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah, give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows, Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah, when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows, And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed that will disclose what everybody knows
And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart Before it blows
And everybody knows, Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes, Everybody knows, Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes

Cathedral - Crosby, Stills & Nash
News-worthy opinions from Stephen Hawking and the Pope himself last week. I'll stick with the former, please.
Here's Cathedral from Crosby, Stills, and Nash' 1977 LP CSN. As clear a message as any.
Six o' clock In the morning, I feel pretty good
So I dropped into the luxury of the Lords
Fighting dragons and crossing swords
With the people against the hordes who came to conquer.
Seven o'clock in the morning, here it comes
I taste the warning and I am so amazed I'm here today, seeing things so clear this way
In the car and on my way to Stonehenge.
I'm flying in Winchester cathedral
Sunlight pouring through the break of day.
Stumbled through the door and into the chamber;
There's a lady setting flowers on a table covered lace
And a cleaner in the distance finds a cobweb on a face
And a feeling deep inside of me tells me this can't be the place
I'm flying in Winchester cathedral.
All religion has to have its day
Expressions on the face of the Saviour made me say I can't stay.
Open up the gates of the church and let me out of here!
Too many people have lied in the name of Christ for anyone to heed the call.
So many people have died in the name of Christ that I can't believe it all.
And now I'm standing on the grave of a soldier that died in 1799
And the day he died it was a birthday and I noticed it was mine.
And my head didn't know just who I was and I went spinning back in time.
And I am high upon the altar, high upon the altar, high.
I'm flying in Winchester cathedral,
It's hard enough to drink the wine.
The air inside just hangs in delusion,
But given time,I'll be fine.

Alela Diane - Pirate's Gospel
Looking back on the summer holidays – we spent a fantastic week on the north Yorkshire coast, fossil-hunting, rock-pooling, listening to tales of Dracula, smugglers and pirates. A fantastic place for family holidays – unless you fancy sunbathing!

Tomorrow the Plataforma en Defensa de l'Ebre - campaign group for the conservation of the river Ebre and its surroundings - celebrates 10 years of campaigning. However, if political promises had been kept, and EU legislation applied, I think we could all have left the campaign behind and moved on. However, seeing where we are at present, best get ready for another 10 years.
But for now, party - Festa - and tomorrow will be another day .... The Pogues with Fiesta.

Blackpool, amb Little Boots
Football’s back (has it ever been away?). I was quite amazed to see that Blackpool have been promoted to the Premier League after 40 years in the doldrums of the lower divisions! Not that I am a Blackpool fan but everyone has heard tales of Stanley Matthew and Blackpool’s glory years, with the epic 1953 FA Cup Final against Bolton taking pride of place in our parents’, or grandparents’ folklore.
Another success story from Blackpool, here’s Little Boots herself once more, with Meddle.

Northern Industrial Town - Billy Bragg
For me, the most important news story of last week was ETA’s declaration of a (sort of) cease-fire (once more). Taking it with a pinch of salt, let’s hope this time it’s for real. As much as I may sympathise with the Basques’ cause, I believe there is no place for violence and death in their fight. The time has come – actually, a long time ago – to lay down their arms and fight as a democratic alternative.
Thankfully, the news story has died down which I believe is a good thing – hopefully, the government are taking whatever steps are needed to make sure that peace will finally arrive to the Basque country.
Here’s Billy Bragg again with his 1996 song, Northern Industrial Town. Here he expresses his, and everyone’s desire, back then for Belfast to become a normal town where only normal things happen.
It's just a northern industrial town
The front doors of the houses open into the street
There's no room for front gardens, just two-up two-down
In a northern industrial town
And you can see the green hills 'cross the rooftops
And a fresher wind blows past the end of our block
In the evenings the mist come rolling on down
Into a northern industrial town
And there's only two teams in this town
And you must follow one or the other
Let us win, let them lose, not the other way round
In a northern industrial town
And the street lights look pretty and bright
From the tops of the hills they rise dark in the night
If it weren't for the rain you might never come down
To your northern industrial town
And on payday they tear the place down
With a pint in your hand and a bash'em out band
Sure they'd dance to the rhythm of the rain falling down
In a northern industrial town
And there's plenty of artists around
Painters steal cars, poets nick guitars
Cos we're out of the black and into the red
So give us this day our daily bread
In a northern industrial town
But it's not Leeds or ManchesterLiverpool, Sheffield, nor Glasgow
It's not Newcastle-on-Tyne. It's Belfast
It's just a northern industrial town
Merry Christmas, war is over
In a northern industrial town

The World Turned Upside Down
Over three hundred people took part in the torch-lit march through Tortosa at the weekend to commemorate Catalunya’s National Day.
Today’s song, though, has very little to do with Catalunya or independence apart from the fact that it is a protest song by one of England’s best protest singers. Billy Bragg sang about the Diggers in his song The World Turned Upside Down – on his 1985 EP Between The Wars.

For many people - example, yours truly - September represents a "new year"; holidays over and it's back to work and the daily routines. To avoid getting the "new year blues", nothing better than the Jim Jones Revue - here with Little Richard's hit, Hey Hey, Hey.

The Beatles (14) - Love & Where My Guitar Gently Weeps
Where My Guitar Gently Weeps.
With just eight years of recordings and 12 or 13 LPs, John, Paul, Ringo and George changed the world. And not just the world of music, as society and culture would never be the same again.
If anyone thinks they may get stuck on a desert island, alongside the literature of Shakespeare, there would be nothing more varied and interesting musically than the complete collection of Beatles’ albums.
Besides these, though, we cannot forget some great singles - some not included on the LPs - , so another recommendation would be the compilations known as the Red and Blue Albums. And for a more intimate vision of the Fab Four, check out the Anthology CDs.
Finally, I love the choice of music and renewed production George Martin and his son prepared for the album Love, for the show Cirque du Soleil put on in Vegas. Below we can see 10 minutes of a fascinating documentary about the music of this show. In this extract they talk about the song Lady Madonna, and also another of my favourites, Where My Guitar Gently Weeps. Following that, a 2 minute clip of this track in the show, and last but not least a medley advertising the show. Sit back and enjoy yourselves!

Independència
Estem a punt per a l’independéncia? Pos, no sé.
Three hundred years later, perhaps the demonstration on the 10th July showed Catalonia is about to re-gain its independence. Perhaps not. There has been some political movement but nothing like I expected. It seems like the “Catalan” vote will be split at the upcoming elections between 101 small parties each fighting for their own corner. Maybe the people are ready, but the politicians are lagging behind?

The Beatles (13) - Across The Universe
It Be, o Get Back, The Long and Winding Road, Across The Universe ...
The last Beatles’ album was Let It Be. The “difficult” one. Here there wasn’t a hope in hell of them agreeing on anything, actually being in the same room was hard enough to achieve apparently. Among the many problems it seems that Lennon’s choice of a new manager for the group was one of the last straws, putting money in front of any artistic ideas they may have had – especially McCartney. After leaving the album on the shelf for a year, they blew the dust off, got to work again, and it was given to the producer Phil Spector to apply the “wall of sound” touch. This decision annoyed Paul so much that in 2003 he brought out the version of the album he had originally imagined, now called Let It Be ... Naked.
If we forget their problems, though, and listen to the music, we have another great album on our hands. Let It Be, Get Back, The Long and Winding Road, Across the Universe ...
Across the Universe, a beautiful song to (almost) finish this series of posts about the best group of all time.

The Beatles (12) - medley de Abbey Road
1969 and 1970 saw the end of the Beatles. So much has been said, and I’m sure that every explanation has some truth behind it... suffice it to say, that perhaps it was unrealistic to expect 4 geniuses to be able to work together forever when each had so much to say and do.
In 69 they recorded tracks for the album Let It Be but the recording and production caused so many arguments that they put it to one side and started again, thereby delaying the inevitable breakup. They then came up with their penultimate LP, Abbey Road. They no longer worked together, here songs were either by Lennon or by McCartney but with no input from each other (without forgetting Harrison’s Something or Ringo’s Octupus’s Garden). Legend even says that McCartney recorded all the instruments himself on some of the tracks!
Even though they no longer were a group happily working together, Abbey Road still contains some classic songs – together with the two already-mentioned, what about Come Together or Here Comes The Sun?
However, for me the best part is the second side of the LP where Paul put together small extracts from songs he had never finished to come up with a breath-taking medley of non-existent tracks. Here is just 10 minutes of this masterpiece.

The Beatles (11) - All Together Now
OK, the twice weekly posts have kept us going through the summer holidays, but now it’s time to get back to work and blogging, so this week I’ll try and finish the Beatles’ series with daily posts and move on to something else ...
After the White Album, in 1969, would come Yellow Submarine to accompany the film of the same name. Only half the album consists of Beatles’ songs, the other half being instrumental compositions by George Martin. And only 4 of the songs were original as others had been hits before.
The film? Well, if your mind is open and switched on to the 60s, it’s worth watching ... especially with children!
One of the new songs recorded for this album was All Together Now.

The Beatles (10) - Helter Skelter i Rocky Raccoon
1968 saw the arrival of the double album popularly known as the White Album, although the Beatles never gave it this name. If any doubts remain regarding their genius and talents, this is the album to listen to. The peak of the Beatles' achievements for most fans. Ranging from heavy rock of Helter Skelter, leaving the Stones and The Who with no doubts about whether the Beatles could “rock”, to the hill-billy humour of Rocky Raccoon, this album is unbelievably rich.

The Beatles (9) - Fool on the hill
In theory the Beatles brought out 12 LPs, but now there are 13 available. Why? In 1967 they brought out Magical Mystery Tour as a 6 track EP to accompany the film of the same name. However, in the USA it came out as an 11-track album including singles which hadn’t been on previous albums. When MMT appeared on CD, it was this full LP version which was brought out. So 12 LPs became 13!
The Beatles, as with other groups back in the 60s, would even have enough material to be able to bring out singles without the need to put them on an album – as with the double-A-sided Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane.
From Magical Mystery Tour, here’s Fool on the Hill.
