The Spanish Civil War ended 71 years ago, and was followed by 36 years of Franco’s dictatorship. Luckily Franco died in 1975 and has been dead and buried, I hope, for 35 years now, and Spain and Catalunya seem to be democratic modern countries. It’s seeing things like this which explains why some of the great surrealists, such as Buñuel, could only have been born in Spain!
There were many protest songs sung openly, or clandestinely, during those dark years. One of my favourites is Al Vent, by Raimon, a cry for freedom from 1959.
