Why?

Why?

So, after Barça have beaten arch-rivals Real Madrid, the pleasant and polite Madrid manager, Jose Mourinho, asks WHY? Is he asking why Barça had the ball 75% of the time, why Madrid play with 11 defenders with the sole tactic of kicking the opposition while they wait for the referee to count down the 90 minutes, all this in their own stadium! Why does he have his own marvellous attackers back in his own half playing dirty defensive football? Does he ask why Barça are 8 points ahead in the league, scoring hat-fulls of goals and playing glorious footie week in week out, or why Barça have one foot in the Champions League Final?
No, it turns out he's asking why the "system" has it in for him, why his teams always lose for dodgy (in his opinion) refereeing decisions (never for his own tactical decisions), why Barça are in control of a conspiracy which makes sure Mourinho can never win anything ? Sob, sob.

Last Christmas - Wham!

Another year nearly over, as they say. As with most years, there's been good times and bad times. Without wishiing to ignore or minimize the misery and poverty in the world, or more serious problems, as usual football as given us all a good dosis of opium ... and here Barça's Gerard Pique reminds us of 5 small moments of joy!

Music-wise, Wham remind (some of) us of those 80s' discos and Christmas hugs and kisses ...

Wow, molt prometador!

Barcelona FC have won every trophy under the sun in recent years, breaking world records, with a breath-taking style of fast-flowing technical football. If we add to this a certain level of fair-play, and 7 or 8 first team players being "home-grown", we have something special.

Real Madrid have a certain reputation for being a good, but arrogant team. And Barça's greatest rivals - for obvious reasons. For years and years their matches have represented the long-term "match" between Catalonia and Spain. Last season was especially exciting with each team pushing each other to the limit, breaking point-winning and goal-scoring records as they went. It went down to the wire, with Barça taking the League eventually - not surprising if we see Messi in action.

This year Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo (two "special" ones) have been added to the mix.

Fireworks are promised!

Check this year's match out, Monday at 21.00, just 24 hours after the Catalan elections.

So, let's re-live a few great moments as we wait for Monday to come. As the song says, Ja Som Campions (we are the champions)

Perfect - Lightning Seeds

.........................

Barcelona Football Club, el Barça, are special for many reasons – their rivalry with Real Madrid has always represented the political struggle between Catalonia and Spain. A struggle which continues today. And back in the darkest times of Franco’s dictatorship, the Barça stadium was one of the few places where Catalans were safe to express their feelings. As they say, it is something more than just a football club.

If that were not enough, their philosophy towards football is one of stylish elegant play, always looking to entertain and not just to win at all costs. They have made a huge effort to develop “home-grown” players, bringing young teenagers to Barcelona to live, continue their studies, and train together. The present team, for example, often has 7 or 8 players in the line-up who have come up through the ranks. Not for Barça the “players” more interested in advertising underwear or appearing in sensationalist news stories – as a rule, Barça players learn the club’s philosophy of humility and common sense. (Let’s not get carried away, of course they earn millions and drive fast cars just like any first class footballer, but in general there is a marked difference in attitude). To cap it all, while every other major team has sold their soul, well, shirt, to the highest bidding sponsor, Barça proudly bear the logo of Unicef on their shirts. An honour for which they donate money and time to Unicef, whereas other teams count the money their sponsors pour into their accounts.

Here endeth the lesson! Last year Barça won the Spanish League, Spanish King’s Cup, European Champions’ League, and World Club Championship – that’s to say, everything! In doing so they inflicted a very painful 2-6 home defeat on Real Madrid. Keeping our fingers crossed, they are on course for the League and European Champions’ once more (at least). And to round it all off, they have just beaten Madrid 0-2 at home!

The only song title to define this is Perfect. From the Lightning Seeds’ 1994 album Jollification.
