Pulp - a film about life, death and supermarkets

La setmana passada vam mirar el DVD, "Pulp, a film about life, death and supermarkets" - un documental sobre el seu, probablement, ultim concert a Sheffield al 2012 amb entrevistes amb membres del grup, però a més amb gent i fans de Sheffield. Una petita joia. Aquesta setmana ho tornaré a mirar. Per mi, com he dit alguns cops, Pulp són un dels grups millors del pop/rock. Tant per la musica com la lletra com l'actitud. Pocs grups m'arriben a dir tant amb la lletra, parlant de les coses del dia a dia sense usar els clitxes del pop happy-flowers, el teu amor és com una estrella .... etc. No, parlen d'anar pel carrer en la pluja i bruticia, dels embolics de veritat que senten els joves (i grans), de les cases i feines que jo vaig coneixer creixent a South Yorkshire... en fi, tal com he dit algun cop, el Common People només es pot entendre com una de les millors cançons de l'historia si realment has viscut al nort d'Anglaterra.

Bé, alguna cançó que ja no havia penjat anteriorement: Cocaine socialism (o sigui el socialisme de pijos de fantasma i de enganys que practiquen alguns politics malanomenats "socialistes").

Saw the documentary about Pulp's "last" (hope not!) concert in Sheffield in 2012. "Pulp, a film about life, death and supermarkets" reaffirmed what I already knew - few groups have been able to really describe life for "common people" in South Yorkshire, describing their (our) everday lives, or write about love without falling into "you are like a star to me" cliches. I've said it before (especially with this run of blog posts), Pulp are one of the few groups whose lyrics I actually pay attention to. They may seem simple at times, but they hit home and many a tremble down the spine has been felt....

Anyway, this film is highly recommended, with concert footage interspersed with interviews with the band and many Sheffield folk. 

So, looking for a song by them I haven't already posted, what about this one and it's indictment of mainstream politicians...

Hugh Laurie - Copper Bottom Blues

Fa uns dies vaig vore aquest documental, explicant el viatge /gir que fa Hugh Laurie i the Copper Bottom Band per les EEUU fins arribar a California i el vaixell el Queen Mary. L'objectiu és un homenatge a l'artista Professor Longhair qui havia tocat un concert de llegenda aquí fa 40 anys.

Els que heu seguit la carrera de Hugh ja sabreu que és un bon actor, i bon comediant, però el seu amor de veritat és la música. Ara fa un parell d'anys que s'ha dedicat a gravar i tocar blues, i de pas, explorar la seva historia. No us explicaré que passa al documental, ja que s'ha de mirar! Només dir-vos que és un fascinant viatge, que encara ens hipnotiza més quan ens ho explica una persona per la qual la música li representa tant.

Saw this documentary a few weeks ago - Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Blues band go on a tour of the USA with the objective of exploring the history of the blues and finally play a concert on the Queen Mary in California, just as Hugh's hero, Professor Longhair, has played 40 years before. 

If you've followed Hugh's career, you'll probably know that he is a decent actor, a pretty good comedian, but his real love is music. For the last couple of years he's been recording and playing blues and generally having a damm good time of it! This film is fascinating - whether you are interested in blues or just like hearing a real fan speak about their favourite subject.

Beware of Ginger Baker

Continuant amb el tema. Aquesta setmana hem mirat el documental Beware of Ginger Baker. Bonissim!

Ginger és un dels bateries més coneguts i més bons de l'historia del rock, encara que, segons ell, el seu primer amor és el jazz. Als 60 va formar part d'alguns dels grups més interessants  d'aquella epoca, com Cream o Blind Faith. Després, la seva excentricitat, impulsivitat i ganes de experimentar noves coses li han portat per una vida "de pel·licula". No se sap com, però ha sobreviscut els excessos i les drogues i encara viu, i toca, a Sur Africa, el lloc on el documentalista li ha fet l'entrevista. Una altra de les histories inoblidables que ens ha deixat la bona musica.

Sticking with the theme - this week, yet another rock-documentary. The fascinating Beware of Ginger Baker.

Ginger first came to fame as the drummer of 60s' groups like Cream or Blind Faith, and was quickly recognised as the first great rock drummer - although he'd rather be known as a jazz drummer. After the brief exhilarating lives of these groups, his excentricity, impulsiveness, and desire for new experiences led him to an amazing series of adventures in the world of music (and polo!). Somehow he also managed to survive his lifestyle and all the drugs, and still lives, and occasionally plays, in South Africa - which is where the documentary-maker went to interview him. Another fascinating story that rock music has gifted us with.

El tercer documental que he mirat aquesta setmana, ja ho vaig veure fa 2 anys per primer cop. It Might Get Loud, nos explica l'historia de tres dels guitarristes de rock més bons del món, Jimmy Page, The Edge, i Jack White. D'on van sortir, com van aprendre, quins estils toquen - i un monton d'anecdotes interessants per qualsevol fan de la musica rock - fan que la pel·licula se'ns fa curt! També els tres es troben junts per a xerrar i tocar junts. Si sents curiositat per la musica rock dels ultims 50 anys, aquest documental també és un "must-see"!

The third music-based documentary I'm going to praise is It Might Get Loud. The history and life of three of the great rock guitarists, albeit each one from a diferent time period. Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White. Their lives, upbringing, first steps on the road to fame, and musical fulfillment - their different concepts and playing techniques - loads of amusing and interesting anecdotes ... it all adds up to a "must see" for anyone interested in the last 50 years of rock music. The three stars also meet up to chat together and play a couple of tunes.

I posted these a couple of years back when I first saw this film, so today what I'll do is post different songs they are each well-known for (gulp, losing control of my English here!)

Living in the Material World #GeorgeHarrison

Segon documental que us recomano; Living in the Material World. Aquest documental fet per Martin Scorsese sobre la vida de George Harrison és molt bonic, i molt interessant. La vida de George potser el menys conegut de totes les histories dels Beatles, però potser és un dels més interessants sobretot en l'etapa post-Beatles. M'agraden els Beatles, m'agrada George, i tots els projectes que ha anat fent, i m'agrada que un director de cine li dediques més de 3 hores de pel·licula.

Second hot tip; the documentary Living in the Material World. Martin Scorsese's documentary on the life and times of George Harrison. Maybe he was the least talked about of the Beatles, but he led a fascinating life, especially post-Beatles - being involved in many amazing music projects all the way up to his death. I love the Beatles, I love hearing about them, I love George and his music, and I particularly love the way a director like Martin Scorsese has given him over 3 hours of film!

Searching for Sugarman #Rodriguez

Aquests ultims dies he mirat una mica la tele - tot una novedad! I he aprofitat per a posar-me al dia en el tema de documentals relacionats amb la musica. Aixi que, avui començo les recomanacions. Primer, Searching for Sugarman (no sé si ho van traduir aqui, seria Busant al Sugarman). Suposo que els altres 6,999,999 Catalans ja ho heu vist, però jo no vaig poder anar al cine i el DVD fa mesos que està a la prestageria esperant el seu moment , que va ser la setmana passada. Aquesta pel·lícula és molt especial si no et conten lo que passa, per tant, no vaig a posar cap "spoiler". Només us dirà que totes les persones que hi surten, i la gent que ha fet el documental, són gent a qui la musica els parla. Gent a qui la musica els dona sentit a la vida, gent que viu per a, o amb, la musica. T'explica com petits moments poden canviar el món, o poden canviar les persones.

Realment paga molt molt la pena. Ara us ajunto una de les cançons del Sixto Rodriguez, estrella de l'historia, i a continuació la pel·lícula sencera - però evidentment si la podeu veure al cine encara, pos, millor!

The last few weeks, I've actually managed to watch a bit of telly - for once in my stressed-up life. Among other films, I've tried to catch up with a few music-based documentaries that I'd not had chance to see yet. And now I will recommend them to you! First up, Searching for Sugarman. The story of the singer Sixto Rodriguez. This film is especially great to watch if you don't know the story beforehand, so I'm not going to give you any clues here! But I will insist - it's well worth watching, especially if you like the magic of life, the magic of music. All the characters, and the film-maker, show the joy they receive through music, and how it adds a certain magic to their lives. So, if you can, check it out at the cinema, fantastic; if not, here's a Youtube link to the film. Even if you are not struck on the music itself (impossible!), the story of how music can change or make people's lives is always awe-inspiring. So, first a song, and then the full film ...

Pel·lícules diverses, amb Derezzed dels Daft Punk

Ultimament he tingut més temps a casa del que voldria i aprofitat per mirar algunes pel·licules, i ara farem una critica express:

Hancock - d'un superheroi borratxo i mal-educat, molt bona i original, però no apte pels petits de casa!

Tiana i el gripau - no és cap gripau, és una granota. Bona pel·lícula, però les escenes del vudu donen una mica de temor als petits. Bon jazz!

Iron Man 2 - evidentment, un classic. Iron man + Robert Downey Jr + Gwyneth Paltrow, pos, que pot fallar.

Dos tontos muy tontos (Dumb and Dumber) - només ho he vist 8 vegades.

El castell caminador (bé, en castellà, el castillo ambulante) - dibuixos animats, un conte precios i original, japones.

Control - l'historia del cantant de Joy Division. Molt bona pel·lícula, molt bona música, però evidentment depriment i trist (no explico que passa).

Shark Boy i Lava Girl - superherois fantastics per als xiquets, ens va agradar molt.

Tron - recordant vells temps, la primer pel·lícula que vaig anar a vore al cine tot sol. Bonissima, no l'havia tornat a vore en 30 anys i recordava gairebe tot. Una pel·lícula (igual que Bladerunner salvant les distancies, una es per a grans, una, pos, no) que encara que parlava del futur, no s'ha quedat antiguada. Sovint quan veus pel·lis futuristes fetes fa 10 anys, te'n rius de com pintaven el futur, però aquesta està ben aconseguida.

Tron Legacy - la segona part que van fer l'any passat. Bestial!! I amb moltes referencies a la primera, es recomana mirar totes dues juntes. I surt la "Tretze" ;)

Scoop - Woody Allen + Scarlett Johansson = perfecció! Guio previsible però no és l'important quan busques a Woody Allen (o la Scarlett!).

Escoltant a Garzon - ja se que aquest jutge no te gaire simpaties a Catalunya però l'historia d'ell és l'historia de l'estat espanyol recentment - patetic. Aixo si, encara que només sigui una entrevista, la posat en escena de Coixet està molt bé`. L'unica pega, que podrien haver dit el mateix en la meitat del temps.

More time on my hands these days and I've become an express-film critic. So what have I watched this week;

Listening to Judge Garzon - a 90 minute interview with the "super-judge" from Spain (remember Pinochet?) who is currently fighting to save his career and reputation after numerous half-baked attacks from right-wing press and pressure groups. Thanks to his attempts to get Spain to recognise what had gone on under Franco, and allow relatives of those killed and tortured to find out the truths, the right-wing in Spain have decided to do away with him by hook or by crook. An amazing story, though a little complicated.

Tron - first film I saw on my own at a cinema back in the early 80s. This week repeated in TV, still great, and still looks futuristic.

Tron Legacy - second part just came out, and just as good as the first - with plenty of winks to it. And Jeff Bridges. And "Thirteen"!!

Scoop - Woody Allen + Scarlett Johannson - must I say more! Weak plot, but great lines abound.

The Princess and the Frog - great Disney film, great jazz.

Howl's Moving Castle - Japanese cartoon fairy tale, a beautiful film, recommended for all ages, really well made.

Iron Man 2 - one of my favourite cartoon heroes + Robert Downey Jr + Gwyneth Paltrow = 10 out of 10

Hancock - new look at superheroes , not for kids, but really funny!

Dumb and Dumber - only seen it 8 times

Control - the story of Ian Curtis, the Joy Division singer. Great film, great music, and depressing story.

Shark Boy and Lava Girl - fantastic, in every sense of the word, superhero film for kids.
