OK, aixi que tornem a estar al mig del futbol. Que podem dir? Fa dos anys ja vaig invertir prou temps parlant d'Anglaterra i les seves probablitats de guanyar el Mundial, unes prediccions que van quedar en un no res. Si feu clik aqui, també vereu tot un seguit de grans cançons relacionades amb el futbol anglès. Aquest any ho agafarem en més calma, i deixarem l'euforia per si passem del grup avui ...

Wow, just as one football competition finishes, so another one starts. I've been a bit slow of the blocks to comment on the Euro Championships, though, given all the (undeserved) praise and blog-space I gave England at the last World Cup. This year, we'll take a more subdued outlook on it - at least till we get past the group stage tonight.

This restrained excitement is embodied by our flag, bought in an Asda sale for 10 pence after England got knocked out of the last World Cup.

No m'importa qui guanya el FA Cup, la Copa d'Anglaterra - Stoke City o Manchester City. No tinc cap preferencia, però si que trobo bonic que dos equips que normalment no són dels "grans" (encara que Man City ho pensa), competeixen al final. Però si que puc aprofitar per penjar aquesta cançó, ja que els del Stoke ho prenen com el seu anthem.

Where is the love dels Black Eyed Peas

Bé, abans d’entrar plenament en ambient i ritme d’estiu, les noticies. Com era d’imaginar, veient les proves evidents i no escoltant al cor, Anglaterra s’ha quedat eliminat del Mundial – un altre cop. Tots els experts semblen pensar que el problema és l’èxit dels clubs anglesos, on es premia més el fet de gastar diners comprant jugadors estrangers per dominar al Premier League, en comptes d’invertir en joves promeses. Mentre es dona més importància als clubs abans del país, poca cosa podem fer, sense importar si tenim a Capello o qui sigui d’entrenador. També es pensa que els jugadors actuals, la mal-anomenada Golden Generation, no toquen de peus en terra.

Però no tot és futbol, el Tribunal Constitucional ha parlat del Estatut, i també s’ha donat el resultat que es podia esperar fa temps. Si que fa ràbia, però com que tampoc tenia tantes esperances en l’estatut, pos, intentaré no acalentar-me el cap.

De la Plataforma, la bona noticia és que la CE ha obert expedient a l’estat espanyol per a la mala implantació de la Directiva Marc d’Aigues, però mentrestant ningú diu miu sobre el cabal minimament digne que necessita el riu. Bé, el dia 11 piraguada!

Quick look at the news. As could be seen from the group matches, England continued playing poorly and were knocked out of the World Cup – again. Who’s to blame? Apparently, the Premier League and its obsession on club before country, with clubs paying small fortunes for foreign players rather than bringing through young promising stars. We also have the “Golden Generation” or players who do not seem to be in touch with reality.

Back in Catalonia, the news is that the Spanish High Courts have declared parts of the new autonomy statutes to be anti-constitutional. There is an uproar about this here but personally I believe Catalonia needs much more than these new statutes so instead of arguing about them, they should go for broke and demand independence!

On the economic front Zapatero is following other world “leaders” by screwing the “usual suspects” and letting the rich and bankers off the hook.

On the river Ebro front, the European Commission has called Spain to attention over its poor, or non-existent, application of the new River Basin laws. But still neither the Catalan nor Spanish governments have made a move on guaranteeing a future for the Ebro’s ecosystems. Anyway, next weeken we have the annual canoe event where hundreds of local people will canoe down the Ebro.

Aquest dies el bloc té alts i baixos, igual que els meus sentiments sobre el futbol d’Anglaterra. Si és veritat que fins ara els jugadors han demostrat un nivell pobre i, en ocasions, un actitud poc adequat, també és veritat que en futbol només importen les victòries, i fins ara Anglaterra no ha sigut derrotat i ha aconseguit arribar més lluny que algun altre equip “gran”. Esperem que la tècnica Capello continui funcionant ... avui partit contra Alemanya. Tal com va definir el futbol Gary Linekar fa uns anys, el futbol és un esport jugat amb dos equips d’onze jugadors i on sempre guanyen els alemanys als penals! Esperem que la sort canvia avui ...

Mentrestant, entrem l’estiu, i per la gent que viu al mon acadèmic, s’acaba un altre any. És per això que ara baixarem la freqüència dels apunts i el bloc també agafarà un ritme més de descans igual que jo espero poder fer. Quan m’inspiro, faré 4 apunts sobre les noticies recents, però de moment, una cançó que no té res a veure en futbol ni les noticies. These days the blog is up and down, rather like the English football team. Mixed feelings there. Despite the poor performances and attitudes, it is true that the only important thing in football is winning. And perhaps the Capello formula will work. Ellos, hinchada official de la seleccion Argentina

Del futbol que podem dir? És un mundial avorrit i sense interès ni bon joc ni gols, o és una mostra de que els equips “petits” han millorat fins al punt que ja saben aturar els super-rics? Concretament, petites alegries com veure els francesos emprenyats, i el Nova Zelanda frenant als italians, se contrasten amb la decepció de l’Anglaterra oferint un espectacle lamentable l’altre dia. No perquè només van empatar, sinó per l’actitud que van demostrar damunt del camp sense anima ni entusiasme ni cap esforç per a justificar els millons que cobren.

A Anglaterra, fins fa molt poc, era impensable que els aficionats xiulessin al seu propi equip si perden o juguen malament. Sempre es donava suport al teu equip, passi el que passi. D’un parell d’anys cap aquí s’ha donat casos, però, i el divendres va ser un cas. La qüestió de la setmana és si això és justificable. A mi no em passaria pel cap, però reconec que si has gastat un mes de vacances i 5000 euros per anar al mundial per a veure com els multi-millonaris sembla que tan els fot tot, pos, potser si que tenen dret a criticar-los publicament.

Bé, continuant amb el tema futbol, un company m’ha passat un bon link, infinitament més divertit que l’últim partit d’Anglaterra. Toquem fusta, que només podem millorar. Mentrestant aquí tenim una cançó de la hinchada dels, ehem, ehem, costa nomenar-los, Argentina.

Still with football. Do few goals, draws, and paint-drying matches mean that this World Cup is dull, or is it because the minnows are starting to catch up with the big boys?
At least we can enjoy the sight of New Zealand drawing with Italy, or the French throwing a tantrum! Better than watching England’s latest efforts, anyway. It is not just the fact they couldn’t beat Algeria but rather the lack-lustre effort they showed, as if they couldn’t even be bothered to run for their money.
Until recently it would have been unthinkable for football fans to boo their own team in England but Friday was one such incident. Justified? Personally, I wouldn’t, but then again I have not spent 5000 euros and one month’s holiday to see these over-paid superstars lounge around...

Parlant del futbol, per a canviar, a Catalunya - pel que veig - hi ha una barreja de sentiments en vers l’equip d’Espanya. Cosa normal, ja que per molt poca gràcia que fa als catalans que no poden tenir una selecció pròpia i que amb l’equip d’Espanya ens omplen el cap de nacionalisme espanyol, també és trist no poder viure esdeveniments com el Mundial sense recolsar cap equip.

Els grans moments esportius com les Olimpiades o els Mundials, no sé com els catalans els poden gaudir amb la mateixa intensitat que els anglesos, francesos, alemanys per exemple. És molt fotut! Per això, entenc que a alguns els fa gràcia que guanyen els veïns, i més quan la meitat de l’equip és del Barça. Per mi, però, les contres pesen més que els pros i no puc animar a l’equip que simbolitza als que no deixen participar a Catalunya.

Però, bé, només és un joc i que guanyi els millors – de moment entre els quals s’inclou Suïssa!

D'Anglaterra, ara per ara, no ens podem queixar! Encara que es pensa que els americans són dolents jugant a soccer, la veritat és que empatar contra un país amb 7 vegades més població per triar jugadors, no està mal. Mirant el costat positiu, també tenim tres porters per anar fent proves, i el fet és que si Rooney i Gerard marquen un sac de gols, la qüestió de la defensa no serà tan important!

Back to football for a change. From what I can see there is a mixed bag of feelings regarding the Spanish football team here in Catalonia. Given that Catalonia is not allowed to have its own team, and the Spanish team is used to support or elevate Spanish nationalism, it is not surprising that many Catalans wish little good for their neighbours. However, can you imagine living through a World Cup or Olympic Games with no team of your own to support? For this reason, it is not surprising either that others do find themselves egging on, openly or otherwise, the Spanish team. Besides which it’s half the Barça team anyway!
For me, though, the political and injust treatment Spain dishes out to Catalonia outweighs any wish for Puyol and company to win silverware.

Having said that, it’s only a game – may the best team win! And at the moment that includes Switzerland among the candidates!

England – ehmm! Well, trying for something positive, we have to remember that the population of the USA is 7 times ours, so gaining a draw against them is not so bad. And we do have two other goalkeepers to try out. And if Gerard and Rooney start banging them in, who’ll care about the defense?

Per fi, avui comença el Mundial - Three Lions, dels Lightning Seeds

Com vaig escriure fa un parell de dies, la cançó perfecta (per a mi) sobre l’equip de futbol anglès és Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home). Aquí tenim la primera versió de l’any 1996 amb la lletra d’aquell moment. Des de llavors cada 2 o 4 anys s’ha anat adaptant i actualitzant la lletra per incloure més fracassos, més decepcions, i més esperances – esperem que no caldrà re-escriure-la més, ja que aquest any tornarem de Sud Africa amb la Copa en la maleta!

I amb el futbol, que va passar als European Championships de l’any 1996? Deja-vu! Perdre, contra Alemanya, en semi-finals, per penals... sempre la mateixa historia!

Mai més! Avui comencem a acabar amb els mal somnis ... i si és possible que la ruta cap al final passi per eliminar a Portugal o França, passar per damunt d’Argentina en els semi-finals, i derrotar a Alemanya en el final!

As I posted a few days ago, my favourite English football song is Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home). Today it’s time to hear the original version from 1996 with the lyrics written back then. Since that time, the lyrics have been adapted several times to include more failures, more disappointments, and more wishful thinking. Let’s hope it will never have to be re-written again as this year we’re coming back from South Africa with the World Cup in the suitcase!
So this is the song. And the football, what happened in 1996? As you can imagine, we lost once more, to Germany, on penalties in the semis!! Again!
No more, this time we’re going to put an end to this nightmare and if I could wish for the perfect World Cup it would inlcude knocking out other old foes like Portugal or France, walking over Argentina in the semis, and destroying Germany in the final ...

The one thing that keeps England football fans going, that helps us to keep the faith that one day we will once more hold the World Cup in our national sport, the one we invented! 1966, England beat Germany in the World Cup Final and names like Gordan Banks, Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, and many more, earn their places in our collective memory.

Who remembers the song, though? World Cup Willie by Lonnie Donegan devoted to the 1966 mascot.

Passen els anys sense tenir la Copa a casa, This Time del 1982.

Un altre mundial que vam viure sense pena ni gloria, el dels veins a l'any 82. Almenys la cançó, This Time, cantada pels jugadors, feia gràcia en el seu temps – 28 anys desprès, ha perdut algo pel cami!

Més cançóns amb futbol, World In Motion dels New Order

Un altre any de decepcions va ser l’any 1990, quan Anglaterra va perdre en semi-finals, per penals, contra Alemanya – el pitjor cas possible! La cançó oficial d’aquest any no estava mal, però. Aquí ho tenim, World In Motion dels New Order.

One of the greatest disappointments in English football history was losing on penalties to Germany in the 1990 semi-finals! However, at least New Order’s World in Motion was worth a listen.

La Copa del Món torna a Anglaterra, amb la cançó Three Lions

Ha acabat la temporada del futbol, i ara comença el mundial del futbol! Ens retallen o congelen els salaris, retallen serveis i infraestructures, i molta gent està perdent la feina, però per sort ara ve el futbol i si guanya el nostre equip, pos, la crisi es veurà d’un altre color! Per tant, oblidem els rotllos politics i filosòfics de la vida, i anem a ficar cerveses a la nevera ....

La mala noticia d’aquest any és que, per primer cop des de l’any 1966, l’equip d’Anglaterra no té una Cançó Oficial. Em sap molt de mal, però si és la manera de concentrar-se amb la pilota i acabar amb aquest mal somni de 44 anys sense tenir la copa a casa nostra, on ha d’estar, pos, tot sigui per a la causa ....

Tradicionalment l’equip anglès sempre ha tingut la seva cançó, algunes més bones, algunes no tant. A l’any 1996 per a celebrar que l’esport de futbol tornava a casa seva, o sigui a Anglaterra, ja que hi jugava el European Championship allí, es va gravar la meva cançó favorita de la gama de “cançóns relacionades amb futbol”, la Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home). La van gravar el grup de pop, els Lightning Seeds, juntament amb dos comediants, Frank Skinner i David Baddiel. La lletra és un bon resumen dels, llavors, 30 anys de dolor, que ara ja sumen 44 (hi ha algú que no sap que vam guanyar el Mundial a l’any 1966?).
Encara que no hi ha cançó oficialment aquest any, s’ha fet una nova versió d’aquest hit ara amb la (no gaire encertada) participació de Robbie Williams i Russell Brand. I algú ha fet un vídeo bastant bo per entendre els fracassos i decepcions que hem patit ... fins ara, ja que d’aquí un mes la Copa tornarà a casa un cop més!
It’s coming home ...!

OK, so the footie season has finished, just in time for the World Cup to start! Who said there was a crisis? What does it matter that unemployment is soaring, and the government is raising taxes, lowering salaries, cutting back on public services and investments – what does all this matter if your team can win the World Cup? How easy it is to keep us happy ... so let’s forget the mundane news of politics and disasters, and get some beers in the fridge.

Strange news story of the year was that the FA has not requested an Official England football song this year, for the first time since ’66. Well, if it helps keep minds on the job in hand, so be it. However, Robbie Williams and Russell Brand have participated in a re-make of Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home) – originally a song for the 1996 European Championships. The best ever football song in my opinion. So here’s 44 years of hurt in a nutshell – with a cool home-made video which some kind person has prepared and uploaded.
