Telephone Line

Preguntes.
Electric Light Orchestra amb Telephone Line del LP A New World Record, 1975.
....
The same bleeping internet/telephone company has rung us at least 10 times this week with the same bleeping super-mega-offer. Hey, if it's so good, why are you paying a Mexican next-t-nothing to ring me up every day when the first day you got my answer loud and clear. I won't continue the rant as the kind of language I'd need isn't acceptable on my blog! Aaaaggghhhh!
The great, the fantastic, the one and only ... ELO !!

It might as well be spring

It might as well be spring (Rodgers/Hart), de la pel·licula State Fair, any 1945, aqui amb versió cantada per Ella Fitzgerald. Ja podria ser la primavera
....
The nasty Pine Processionary caterpillar appearing in gardens aling the Mediterranean is the first annual sign that spring is about to arrive. This horrible little thing lets off a "dust" which can cause serious allergic reactions or even worse medical problems, from distances of a metre or two. Keep away!!
The second sign that spring is coming is when I switch the radiators off - just before the last unexpected cold front hits Catalonia!

It Might As Well Be Spring, a great Rodgers/Hart song, here sang by Ella.

Post-bookcrossing

On fan cap aquests llibres?
The Books amb An Owl With Knees, LP Lost and Safe (2005).
....
As we said last week on our other blog, Saturday was bookcrossing day in Tortosa. A resounding success, at least one hundred books were distributed and probably many more as people were encouraged to participate with their own un-wanted books. There was lots of interest from local press and radio, so many people were aware of this. We left the 15 we'd been given, plus two of our own.
What next? These books will go to a good home, or end up in a litter bin? Who knows. But little by little, emails, phone calls, comments, are letting us know that some have been found and will be treasured. A great encouragement to repeat the event in the future.
It also coincided with UK Book Night! Another million books looking for a good home.

Pagina 37 “at arm’s length”.
Pagina 50, “playback” i “single”.
Pagina 63, “trending topic”. Oi que tothom ho diu en anglès? I “back up” i “cloud computing”?

Kate Bush (i David Gilmour!) amb Running Up That Hill.
......

Today’s post will make little sense to most modern day English-speakers, who probably do not speak a second language. It refers to the gradual encroachment of English vocabulary into other languages, in our case Catalan. It’s only natural. In fact English itself is a mix and match of many “foreign” words, such as restaurants and bungalows, but as English is now the Number One universal language, this “problem” has moved on. In Sunday’s edition of a Catalan newspaper we counted many words used directly in English – often because Catalan has yet to “invent” a suitable equivalent (subprimes) or simply because the English expression seems “cooler”.
To be specific, the words were; made in; spin doctor; smart phone; bestseller; only in America; subprimes; at arm’s length; playback; single; commercially orientated; melting pot; trending topic; back up; cloud computing; off.

All , more or less, used with a suitable excuse. However, the reason for this post and rant is one word which I cannot understand why it has to be English-ized. Apparently people who go out jogging, or running (córrer in Catalan from the beginning of time), now call the sport “running”.

They shoot horses, don't they?

, l'any 1977.
....
Welsh group Racing Cars recorded this song in 1977, 8 years after the film of the same name came out - hence all those radio presenters who say it's from the soundtrack, are wrong. Racing Cars simply wrote the song inspired by the film.
The film itself was based on Horace McCoy's 1935 novel about dance marathons in the USA back in the Depression. A great book, film, and song.

Books and music - Killing An Arab

.....
More on books and songs. The Cure's Killing An Arab song is not a dodgy racist song, but rather one with lyrics based on Albert Camus's novel, The Stranger - a book I don't think I'll be reading after looking at a summary on Wikipedia!

Més literatura en música - Richard Cory

Edwin Arlington Robinson va escriure la poema Richard Cory l'any 1897.

....

Richard Cory, a E.A.Robinson's 1897 poem about "money can't buy you happiness", was re-written (same idea, different words) as a song by Simon and Garfunkel for their 1965 album, Sounds of Silence.

The Song:

The Poem:

Whenever Richard Cory went down town,

We people on the pavement looked at him:

He was a gentleman from sole to crown,

Clean favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,

And he was always human when he talked;

But still he fluttered pulses when he said,"Good-morning,"

and he glittered when he walked. And he was rich – yes, richer than a king –

And admirably schooled in every grace:

In fine, we thought that he was everything

To make us wish that we were in his place. So on we worked, and waited for the light,

And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;

And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,

Went home and put a bullet through his head.

A second life for books

......
This weekend, Bookcrossing in Tortosa. Local author Jesús Tibau has organized a "second life" for over 100 novels, which will be left on park benches, walls, shop windows ... all around town. If anyone else wants to "free" those books they have at home, unread, gathering dust on shelves, feel free to participate this day too ....

There's no place like home ...

Before the film with Judy Garland, The Wizard of Oz was (and is) a children's book written by L. Frank Baum in 1900.

A nice sweet tale, or a little unsettling? If you go for the second option, maybe you'll like Breaking Benjamin's 2002 homeage to the story with Home.

Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet dels Dire Straits (any 1980).

Day two: Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits from their 1980 album Making Movies. Apparently there is also a book going by the same title ...

A love-struck Romeo sings the streets a serenade

Laying everybody low with a love song that he made.

Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade

Says something like, "You and me babe, how about it?"

Juliet says, "Hey, it's Romeo, you nearly gave me a heart attack!"

He's underneath the window, she's singing, "Hey la, my boyfriend's back.

You shouldn't come around here singing up to people like that...

Anyway, what you gonna do about it?"

ROMEO:Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start

And I bet when you exploded into my heart

And I forget I forget the movie song.

When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

Come up on different streets, they're both the streets of shame.

Both dirty, both mean, yes, in the dream it was just the same

And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real.

How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?

When you can fall for chains of silver, You can fall for chains of gold,

You can fall for pretty strangers And the promises they hold.

You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, yeah!

Now you just say, "Oh Romeo? Yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him".

Juliet, when we made love, you used to cry.

You said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die".

There's a place for us, you know the movie song.

When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

I can't do the talk, like the talk on TV

And I can't do a love song, like the way it's meant to be.

I can't do everything, but I'll do anything for you.

I can't do anything, 'cept be in love with you!

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be.

All I do is keep the beat... and bad company.

Now all I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme,Juliet,

I'd do the stars with you any time!Juliet, when we made love you used to cry.

You said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die".

There's a place for us, you know the movie song.

When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

NARRATOR:And a love-struck Romeo sings a street-suss serenade

Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made

Finds a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade

He says something like, "You and me babe, how about it?"

ROMEO:You and me babe, how about it?

...

Some time back I posted a series of songs with (weak, subtle, blatant ...) links to books, which can be revisted here.

Well here's Music and Literature Week 2! Moriria por vos (I would die for you) by Spanish group Amaral has it all, from Nicholas Cage to Robinson Crusoe, with a fleeting reference to Oscar Wilde's great novel, The Portrait of Dorian Gray.

Avuí amb Sin Documentos, any 1993.

One of the few Spanish (well, half Spanish, half Argentinian!) groups I've got in my collection, Los Rodriguez with their 1993 hit Sin Documentos.

Make me smile (Come up and see me)

This week, back in 1975 while Franco was peacefully and slowly dying in his pyjamas, this song made number one in the UK.

Hotel California

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair

Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air

Up ahead in the distance, I saw shimmering light

My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I had to stop for the night

There she stood in the doorway; I heard the mission bell

And I was thinking to myself, 'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'

Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way

There were voices down the corridor,I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California, Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)

Such a lovely face

Plenty of room at the Hotel California

Any time of year (Any time of year)

You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends

She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends

How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.

Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain, 'Please bring me my wine'

He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine'

And still those voices are calling from far away,

Wake you up in the middle of the night

Just to hear them say...Welcome to the Hotel California

Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)Such a lovely face

They livin' it up at the Hotel California

What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise), Bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling, The pink champagne on ice

And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device'

And in the master's chambers, They gathered for the feast

They stab it with their steely knives,But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I wasRunning for the door

I had to find the passage back to the place I was before

'Relax,' said the night man, 'We are programmed to receive. You can check-out any time you like,

But you can never leave!'

All you fascists (2)

.....
More of the same. Here's a letter I have had published in February's edition of the English-language magazine Catalonia Today. Swiftly followed up by Billy Bragg and Wilco singing their version of Woody Guthrie's song.
.....
FRANCO LIVES ON
Four important moments in the recent history of the Terres de l’Ebre explain the background leading to Tortosa’s present shame.
In 1936 Franco and his band of fascist troops and mercenaries attempted to overthrow the democratically-elected government of Spain. This coup d’état led to over two years of Civil War, including the Battle of the Ebro, where thousands upon thousands of young innocent lives were lost in a blood-thirsty four-month period. Franco, with the political and material support of Hitler and Mussolini, went on to win the war, while European democracies like England looked away. The result: 40 years of dictatorship, misery, repression and fear in the heart of Europe.
In 1966 Franco had a huge monument built in the middle of the river Ebro dedicated to his glory and that of the fascist soldiers who died in the battle.

Franco died in 1975 but his legacy continued to throw a dark shadow over the Ebro and its people.

Thirty-five years after his death, in 2010, the Mayor and council members of Tortosa voted in favour of maintaining this monstrosity in its original place. A heartless decision, both for those of us who believe in democratic values and, as such, do not understand how Franco’s illegal, illegitimate tyranny can still be on show in public, and to the victims and people who suffered under his dictatorship. A petition for the monument’s removal was signed by a thousand local citizens, with the backing of historians, sociologists, writers, artists, philosophers, and other public figures from Catalonia. It was ignored by Tortosa’s council, and so Franco’s legacy lives on in the 21st century.

All you fascists bound to lose

I després Woody Guthrie.
....

Franco died in 1975, 36 years ago, and we are still gingerly debating his fascist legacy in Tortosa! 6 years after his death, 23rd February 1981, there was a failed coup d’etât in Spain. Perhaps this explains why the transition to a democracy was done quietly and carefully with the least possible feather-ruffling, and maybe it was not a time to anger right-wing nostalgists by removing the monument that Franco erected in the middle of the river Ebro in Tortosa. But now, decades later?!
I have already explained my arguments in previous posts, so today I’ll leave you with an interview (in Catalan) with the “English” author Matthew Tree who has lived in Catalonia since 1984 and can hardly believe we still tolerate this fascist memorial in the centre of our beautiful city.

After Matthew, Woody Guthrie. Back in the 40s while the English were fighting Hitler, thanks, in part, due to our tolerance of fascism’s victory in Spain, Woody Guthrie was doing what he could with his fascist-killing machine!
