As I've said many a time on the blog, Tortosa stands out in Catalunya as having the largest monument dedicated to Franco still standing - 36 years after his death!!

The author and poet Francesc Mompo is encouraging bloggers to write haikus on this subject, and so far has had a good response as can be seen on his blog. As he says, poetry against fascism! Doesn't that bring Woody Guthrie to mind?

Segons Antonia Font, les coses modernes han hagut d'esperar molt per a apareixer en escena ... i resulta que quan han arribat, tampoc es poden quedar! Quina vida han tingut els cassettes - 40 anys? I els discs de vinil, i els cassettes de video? Aixo els VHS, que jo tenia els videos Philips 2000 que potser van "viure" només 2 anys!

I ara que fem? Tenim les cases plenes de cassettes que mai escoltarem, cameres manuals que no usem, maquines d'escriure agafant pols a l'almacen ... però costa fer neteja, veritat?

According to this Catalan pop song (Coses Modernes by Antonia Font), modern gadgets and products have had to wait ages to be invented, and they are not happy about it!

And, as it turns out, no sooner have the appeared than many disappear again in a flash. What is the 40-year life cassettes have had compared to the thousands of years of evolution, or millions since the Big Bang?! What a miserable run vinyl LPs have had, or typewriters, or video cassettes!

And now what - what do we do with the typewriter gathering dust in the loft, or the boxes and boxes of cassettes, or the manual camera in the sock drawer? Completely useless and never to be come out again, but it's hard to say goodbye, isn't it?

Never buy The Sun - Billy Bragg

El gran Billy Bragg ja ha fet una cançó sobre la premsa basura que tenim a Anglaterra. Després de l'escandol del News of the World, amb una bona barreja de policia i politics, ens recorda que hi ha un altre diari, també de la casa Rupert Murdoch, que només es dedicar a repartir merda. The Sun. Un dels seus punts més baixos d'aquest diari va ser fa uns 20 o 30 anys, quan el Hillsborough Disaster - una avalancha de fans de futbol, del Liverpool, va causar la mort de més de 90 persones. El diari The Sun va publicar a la portada la "noticia" de que els altres fans anaven robant rellotges i cateres als morts, i orinant damunt. Una mentira patetica, que després va mereixer una petita disculpa amagat a la pagina -que-ningu-mira. Des de llavors molta gent de Liverpool (Scousers) no compren aquest diari. Ara Billy pregunta si no tenien/tenen rao, i potser ningu hauria de comprar aquesta basura.

As many say, The Sun should also have been kicked off newsagent's shelves after the lies it printed about the Hillsborough Disaster 20 years ago. And Jarvis Cocker's (Pulp) opinion of these papers is to be seen in the photo!

Duck Diving - Pulp

Desprès d’aquesta breve interrupció, acabem la serie del Pulp. L’ultim LP que van gravar va ser We Love Life , l’any 2003. Desprès van aturar les activitats del grup però no es van des-fer formalment. Jarvis Cocker ha anat fent col·laboracions en diversos músics, i ha fet de disc jockei – crec que fins i tot es poden trobar CDs amb la música seleccionada per ell. Al 2006 gravaria un LP, Jarvis, de que ja hem penjat alguna peça en el passat.
Al 2010 van anunciar per sorpresa que tornarien a tocar junts, i des de llavors han anat apareixent en diferents festivals, al maig a Barcelona per exemple, i ara a l’agost estaran a Leeds (Yorkshire)! Continuaran? Tornaran a gravar?
I una ultima cançó pel bloc – una cosa més rebuscada, i molt bonica ... i l’historia, aqui.

So, following that short interlude of summer fun and sun, it’s time to say the final word on the Pulp saga. Following their last LP, We love life, in 2003, they sort-of broke up (but not officially) and each went their different way. The lead singer Jarvis Cocker would spend the next few years working as a DJ, collaborating on many other musical projects, and bringing out his own LP Jarvis in 2006.
Then, surprise surprise, in 2010 they announced a series of concerts, mainly one-offs and festivals – for example, Barcelona back in May, and Leeds next month.
Will they stay together? A new LP?
And to finish off, a real rarity, a piece of beauty based on a short story by written Philippa Pearce in 1964.

Tannu Tuva Summer Selection

Sovint fem, com suposo tothom, recopilacions de música barrejada. Si que és interessant escoltar tot un LP d’un mateix autor de principi a fi; però, per una bona festa, o per ficar al cotxe, no hi ha res com una home-made compilation. L’estiu és un moment típic per preparar-les ja que potser tenim una mica més de temps, i ganes de posar música estiuenca al cotxe! Així que, per acabar el rotllo, hem fet el mateix que cada any – un summer music CD. Bé, fins aquí lo normal ...
La novetat d’aquest any és que un company blocaire de La Voz Telúrica ens ha explicat com penjar-la a la xarxa, i ens ha animat a fer-la, tal com es fa sovint en aquest bloc. (clikeja aquí per la seva selecció).

We love life - Pulp

El grup Pulp continuaria tenint problemes, i canvis en la formació, però l’any 2003 van editar una altra obra d’art, el LP We Love Life (amb un notable producció de Scott Walker). Dos cançons – The Birds in Your Garden, i The Trees, donen un bon idea com ja estaven sortint del pou dels “bad vibes”!

Pulp continued to have their ups and downs, with more changes in the line-up, and indecision about where to go next. Eventually they brought out We Love Life in 2003 with an unmistakeable Scott Walker production. Song titles like The Trees, and The Birds in Your Garden seemed to show that they’d finally learned to live with their fame and overcome the “bad vibes”!

Help the aged - Pulp

Els anys 1995-6 Pulp ja estaven dalt de tot, just on havien volgut estar, i vivint la vida del rockstar. Guanyant premis, declaracions controversials, la famosa protesta contra Michael Jackson (pels “rumors” sobre relacions amb infants), drogues, relacions trencades – tot plegat, the best of times, o no ... un dels components importants del grup va marxar dient que ja no li inspirava continuar en el grup, i el lider Jarvis Cocker es va quedar molt marcat pel costat fosc de la fama – dies i dies avorrits de l’èxit.

El proxim LP ho mostraria amb unes cançóns que ja no eren fresques i plenes de alegria (encara que a vegades abans l’alegria amagava algo...), però densos i negatius. Igualment molt bons, però, pels fans com natros! Sortiria el LP This Is Hardcore al 1998. Un dels singles, Help The Aged.

Pulp had hit the top by now, and lived the rock-star life to the full – controversy, drugs, relationship break-ups, people leaving the group, the famous “Michael Jackson” protest ... but soon Jarvis, the group’s leader, would realise that this longed for success and fame had a dark side. A dark side he’d explore in their next album, 1998’s This Is Hardcore. Today, one of the singles, Help The Aged.

Different Class - Pulp

Després de l’increible LP His ‘n’ Hers, arribaria el igualment bo Different Class l’any 1995. Trobarem peces classiques com Mis-shapes, Underwear, Common People, I Spy, Disco 2000, Something Changed, Live Bed Show.
Per què van calar tan a fons en el panorama musical de la gent? La música és molt bona, una bona barreja d’estils, electronic, però sense perdre el rock o pop, una interessant i original instrumentalització que pocs grups s’atrevien a fer. En fi, catchy! I

la lletra. Normalment sóc dels que penso que el 90% de les lletres de cançons no són res més que un pot-pourri de clitxes fets amb gràcia, però els Pulp estan clarament en l’altre 10%. Potser no ens explicaran el sentit de la vida (això deixarem pels Monty Python) però si que ens conten histories cotidianes que han viscut o vist la majoria de anglesos que han vingut de zones com Sheffield – lloc de neixament d’alguns dels millors músics anglesos! Les histories, res nou, però amb una gràcia i un saber-fer que pocs grups arriben a fer ni en somnis. I sobretot en un anglès natural, col·loquial, impossible de traduir.

De fet, ni les histories són transferibles a altres cultures, ni la llengua, però igualment veig que han tingut èxit a Catalunya – el qual és una nota optimista pels professors d’anglès!

After the unbelievably good album His ‘n’ Hers, would come the equally excellent LP Different Class in 1995. Songs like Mis-shapes, Underwear, Common People, I Spy, Disco 2000, Something Changed, Live Bed Show have gone down as unforgettable classics in the history of pop music.
So, why are Pulp so good and loved? Everyone has their own theory, but my two-penny-worth says it’s a mixture of the music and the lyrics (wow! Original theory!). Musically they are capable of writing many a catchy tune and backing it up with interesting and original instrumentalizations (?!), the likes of which few groups dare to risk. I usually believe that pop music lyrics are nonsense, 90% of them being a string of fair-sounding cliches, but Pulp are firmly in the other 10%. Everyday stories which every English music fan can recognise, told with humour and a fine twist of words, and, aboveall , in a natural, colloquial and realistic language.
Anyway, judge for yourselves. Two songs, Disco 2000 and I Spy, from Different Class.

His 'n' Hers - Pulp

De bó en millor, Pulp seguiria al 1994 amb el LP His’n’Hers, que només té el LP Different Class (també dels Pulp) com a competidor pel Millor LP dels 1990s. No sé com començar a descriure’l, ni quines cançons recomanar. Fa temps vam penjar aquí el single Babies. Però també està Joyriders, Lipgloss, Acrylic Afternoons, Do you remember the first time, Happy Endings ... en fi, compra’l!
Vinga, avuí no podem quedar en una cançó només ...

Razzmatazz - Pulp

Razzmatazz, també un altre gran single dels Pulp de l’any 1993 (que podem trobar al LP Pulp Intro). Del primer vídeo, juny 1994, podem apreciar com en 2 anys van passar de ser un grup underground amb uns seguidors reduits pero entregats, a ser ja un grup de masses – sense compromisos amb la seva música o actitud!

Another fine Pulp single from 1993 (to be got on the Pulp Intro LP). The firts video is from 1994 and shows how they really took off in 2 years. Funny how, you can go from being next-to-nothing to world-famous in a flash, and all this with the same style or music and, aboveall, the same attitude.

XI Piraguada en Defensa de l'Ebre

Stacks - Pulp

Entremig de tot, he fet un pecat terrible. Resulta que no només el Pulp s’han tornat a tocar junts, sinó que han vingut a Barcelona (al maig o juny) i no hem dit res al bloc!!
Que puc dir de nou de Pulp (que no he dit abans)? No molt, ja que crec que la música parla per si sola. Potser el més interessant de l'historia és que van tardar molts d’anys en arribar al stardom. Des del 1978 van passar per diferents formacions i anaven refinant el seu estil, mentre aguantaven les típiques frustracions amb les discografies fins als principis dels 90. Els seus discs abans del 93, no són famosos però val la pena per veure l’evolució exponencial que estaven experimentant. Potser la seva música no pegava als 80 però ells sabien, o havien de saber, esperar que el moment arribaria quan per fi, el món estaria preparat, i, pim pam, un grapat de singles dels més bons.

Razzmattazz, que sentirem demà, havia de ser només un single – recordeu quan els grups feien això?! Desprès ho van ficar en un recopilatori de singles d’aquell època, que es diu Pulp Intro. Aquest LP reunia els 3 singles del 1992-3, Razzmatazz, Babies, i O.U., i una obra en tres parts que deien “Inside Susan: A Story in 3 parts”. Una de les parts, ho sentirem avui – Stacks. No hi ha vídeo oficial i jo tampoc sé com fer videos pel Youtube per tant, veurem aquest on bàsicament surten fotos d’aquesta fan de Pulp que ha tingut la gràcia de recordar d’aquesta gran cançó.

Oh My God! Pulp playing together again, and here in Barcelona and not only did I not go to the concert (sin!) but I never got round to having a Pulp week on the bloc. Luckily Pulp’s been here before – but anyway, here goes.
Although they started out in the late 70s, after various group changes and a constant evolution of their style, and problems with record companies, it wasn’t until the early 90s that the world woke up to what it was missing! In 92/93 they released a string of fantastic singles, three of which would be included, with B-sides,in a mini-compilation to try and get them noticed. Also on this album Pulp Intro, they amazed us with the three part piece of art called Inside Susan: A story in 3 parts. Part one was this track called Stacks which some kind lass has uploaded onto Youtube:)

Ultimament tenim l'ordenador i l'internet fet un nyap. Per un dia que va, 6 que descansa - sembla un funcionari (ei, avis: HUMOR). No sé si és culpa d'algun virus, tanta piscina a l'estiu i ja saps que pots agafar, o de les infrastructures del sur, o dels multinacionals a que hipotequem la vida per estar enganxat a la xarxa, o si són els Anonims, els Sinonims, o els serveis secrets de Felip "Fuig" Puig .... però també va bé. Mira, et dediques a altres coses. Ara ens comuniquem amb senyals de fum.

A nit, el tercer concert del segle 21, vaig sortir a sentir aquest bon grup al Festival de Jazz de Tortosa. Spontaneous Combustion.

Computer and internet playing up. Maybe they want to go on strike too, maybe it's the heat, maybe a virus, maybe the secret police catching up on us ... who knows. But while the pigeons are still flying, who needs the net?!

Managed to get out to my third live concert of the new millenium last night to check out this young Catalan jazz band, Spontaneous Combustion. Excellent!!
