Embarrassment

Han passat uns dies de reflexió i ja ha tornat a caure una capa de pols damunt del monument franquista que tenim al mig del riu Ebre. Prometo que l’apunt d’avui serà l’últim sobre el tema – aquest mes!

Tal com es preveia, el 8 de novembre al plenari de l’ajuntament de Tortosa els 10 regidors de CiU i el regidor del PP van votar en contra de la moció de retirar aquest símbol franquista del riu. A favor de la moció, els 10 vots de PSC, ERC, i ICV.

Els arguments donats no m’han acabat de convençer.
Que si ja ha estat 40 anys aquí, ara forma part del nostre paisatge. També hi formava part un abocador incontrolat o edificis en desús. No pel simple fet de estar present molt de temps, ens obliga a mantenir-ho per a sempre.

Que si ja no té simbologia franquista. Això bàsicament no és un argument, sino una mentida. Que pensen, que l’aguila aquest és l’aguila de la pau? Que pensen, que aquell soldat falangiste és dels cascos blaus? I no ho dic només jo, sino els historiadors.

Que a Tortosa no hi ha debat i que l’immensa majoria de gent vol mantenir el monument. Precisament aquesta campanya, recollida de signatures, el 45 % dels regidors, tema de conversa a diari entre la joventut, demostren que si que hi ha debat.
No m’atreveria a dir que són majoria els tortosins que hi volen retirar, però puc afirmar que no són el “ningú” com ens diuen. De totes formes, el monument s’ha de retirar per llei – una llei aprovat amb els vots de CiU!

I s’ha de retirar per seny. Els tortosins no han de pensar cada u només en ell mateix o en Tortosa, sino en el que representa aquest monument per a la gent que va patir a la guerra, o en la dictadura de Franco. No és qüestió només del que voldria jo o tu o l’altre persona, sinó fer-ho per la gent que van sofrir, i sofren.

Following on from the Franco monument issue of recent posts, believe it or not, but Tortosa’s council have voted to keep it just where it is!

The arguments offered to support this incredible decision include the following – and my opinions.
That the monument has been here for 40 years and forms part of Tortosa. In much the same way a derelict house or rubbish tip might form part, I’d say, but this is no argument for keeping it forever.
That all Franco-ist symbols have been removed from the monument. This is not an argument, this is a lie. It has, very visibly, a gigantic eagle, typical symbol of fascists (and very easily distinguished from a dove of peace), and a Falange soldier. We could go on to discuss that every last rusty screw of the monument has, and can only have, the meaning that the artist gave it – an eulogy of Franco.
That the immense majority of citizens of Tortosa wish for the monument to remain, and that there is no local interest in this question. Excuse me – the petitions, 45 % of councillors, different well-known local personalities, and the fact that young people discuss it on a daily basis seem to give the lie to that one.

Having said that, this is not the main question. Tha facte is that the local council are obliged to remove all Franco-ist symbology by law, a law passed by their very own political party in the Catalan Parliament.

I would also add as the most crucial point that it is not a question of what I, you, or the next person wants, but rather what should be done. We should think not of ourselves but of the thousands who really suffered in the Civil War or under Franco’s dictatorship. In 2010 we can do little else for the victims of Franco but this small step.
